MEDICAL TREATMENT OF HYPERSUDATION (HYPERHIDROSIS)

What is hyperhidrosis?
What are the symptoms of hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is the excessive production of sweat by the sweat glands. This condition often has socio-professional repercussions.
It affects around 5% of the population. Hyperhidosis may be generalised or localised to certain areas of the body, notably the hands, armpits and feet. In this case, it is often bilateral.

The causes of excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis

Sweating is a physiological mechanism needed to maintain body temperature. We have around 3 million sweat glands.
Excessive sweating often begins at puberty, and can be of :
Primary: the cause is not identified and a priori there is none.
Secondary to a pathology.
Factors favouring the onset of the sweating ‘crisis’ are:
Stress.
Anxiety.
Emotionality.
Excitants: tea, coffee, taurine, etc.

How is hyperhidrosis treated?

Treatments for hyperhidrosis include surgery, iontophoresis, medication (psychotropic drugs), psychotherapy and botox injections. Botox injections give good results, do not require social eviction and can be carried out quickly.

Botox injections to treat excessive perspiration

The principle of this technique is to block the nerve stimulation that reaches the sweat glands.
Although this injection can be performed on any part of the body, I only use it for excessive perspiration on the forehead and underarms.
For the hands and feet, because of the sensitivity problems that can occur with this type of injection, I remember that the treatment can be dangerous.
For the patient’s comfort, I ask them to apply an anaesthetic cream one hour before the injection. One bottle per side is used. The injection is very quick.

Results and after-effects

Results are maximal seven days after the injection.
Quality of life is improved with the disappearance of the discomfort associated with the odour of perspiration and the wearing of wet clothes.
The consequences of hypersweating are also treated: skin irritations, mycoses, warts, etc.
After the injection, the patient is asked to avoid applying any product to the armpits and sporting activities on the same day.
