Cryolipolysis: elimination of localized fat by freezing

What is cryolipolysis ?

Cryolipolysis is an aesthetic medicine technique that can be considered a kind of liposuction without surgery.
This method makes it possible to eliminate localised fatty deposits without any serious after-effects.
It can be difficult to get rid of fatty deposits despite a healthy lifestyle, a healthy diet and regular exercise.
This non-invasive technique allows you to lose weight using cold therapy and regain a harmonious figure.

How does cryolipolysis work ?

This cold slimming technique is based on a physical principle discovered by American researchers: fat cells exposed to intense cold destroy themselves.
This exposure causes apoptosis, or the slow, programmed death of the cell. The result is not immediate, but is visible 3 months after the session.
Adipocytes (or fat cells) are more sensitive to cold than other cells.

Studies have shown that, for this procedure to be effective, the session must last one hour and the machine used must meet certain criteria: it must be CE marked (compulsory) and ensure a temperature of at least -5°C at 300mb of pressure.

Is cryolipolysis really effective?

Cryolipolysis, also known as lipocryolysis, is an effective non-invasive treatment for removing localised fat deposits. The areas that can be treated are:
Chin (double chin).
“Love handles”.
The “saddlebags”.

In consultation the doctor checks:
That the patient is a good candidate, i.e. that his skin will be able to retract.
That it is a good indication. Certain areas (for example the knees and arms) respond less well to treatment. Bulges that are too small, where the skin fold is less than 2 cm, cannot be treated.

Treating localised fat without surgery : cryolipolysis procedure

The aim of the prior medical consultation is to select the right candidates, define the number of sessions required and rule out medical contraindications, which are:
Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Cold urticaria.
Certain neurological disorders.
Existence of a wound or infection in the treated area.
Raynaud’s syndrome.
Paroxysmal haemoglobinaemia in the cold.

After photographs have been taken, the patient is placed on the examination couch. The area to be treated is protected by a wipe, a bell-shaped applicator selectively sucks up the fatty bulge, the surrounding tissue is preserved.
Both sides, right and left, are treated at the same time. The treatment lasts one hour.
At the end of the session, the applicator is removed and the area is massaged to relieve congestion.

Results and side-effects

Results are progressive, visible after one month and maximum three months after treatment. It is long-lasting if there is no weight gain.
A single session of cryolipolysis can reduce fat deposits by around 30%. Depending on the size of the fatty bulge, one to three sessions will be required.

In the days following the session, the treated area is congested and may be slightly painful. Haematomas are possible and transitory. Sensory disturbances are rare and transitory (a few days): hypoesthesia (reduced sensitivity) or hyperesthesia (increased sensitivity).

Cryolipolysis is harmless.

During the week following treatment, patients are asked to keep well hydrated, to reduce the intake of fast sugars, soft drinks and coffee, and to avoid exposure to the sun.
